Gathering big volumes of data from the production equipment opens up entirely new avenues for revenues for manufacturing companies. Real data, from machines and tools in production, will be very valuable to equipment manufacturers and that means such data will carry a price tag.
The convergence of products and services through the IoT will also make it possible to further differentiate products, develop entirely new services and expand business offerings. E.g. instead of buying or leasing a piece of production equipment, or tool, a manufacturing company might instead pay for the actual use, based on the duration of use or the number of pieces produced. This would also make it easier to both calculate and motivate the cost, when submitting an offer.
