Wireless Technology

The Frequency Spectrum

There are billions of wireless devices and more are getting connected every day. As a result, the frequency spectrum – a limited resource – is becoming overcrowded.

Most connected products and almost all other wireless technologies – like WiFi, Zigbee, Thread and Bluetooth Mesh – use a single fixed channel. This causes congestion which could degrade the communication quality of your wireless device or even stop it working altogether. Will we soon be talking about the Interference of Things instead of the Internet of Things?

Frequency agility is crucial for a successful IoT deployment. To avoid a future communication breakdown, your wireless device needs to coexist alongside other wireless technologies – without interference.

LumenRadio’s patented Cognitive Coexistence technology ensures maximum reliability and minimal impact on other wireless networks.

Wireless Mesh

Wireless mesh networks are networks where the devices themselves create the coverage and help forward the data. This eliminates the need for a separate infrastructure. The devices create the infrastructure themselves – reducing cost and complexity.

Since data is forwarded from node to node, the range from a device becomes less important. The range no longer has to cover all devices, just the distance between two devices.

Wireless mesh networks are most often self-healing. This means that if the connection is bad – for instance due to device failure or changing conditions – the network will find a new route for the traffic. Therefore, the integrity of the network is not at risk to changes made in the building. In other words, it is future-proof.

Wireless Standards

Wireless standards enable interoperability – that is the ability for a product to talk to and understand other devices – from the sensor to the backend and Cloud. Using a wireless standard for your connected product gives you stability and ultimately minimizes risk at the design stage.

Wireless standards are made up of different protocols and those protocols are often standardized by organisations like the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force).

Choosing the right wireless standard however is a major challenge and the landscape is complicated. There’s WiFi, Bluetooth Mesh, Zigbee, Thread and Contiki, to name just a few. LumenRadio’s MiraOS is also a standard but the difference is, it is built upon several wireless standards.

Cognitive Coexistence

Our patented Cognitive Coexistence technology is the foundation of our wireless technology offering and the main reason why we are the most resilient connectivity solution on the market today. No other company offers a more frequency-friendly or reliable protocol.

The number of wirelessly connected products is increasing rapidly and the majority of these connected devices rely on the same unlicensed frequency bands. This leads to a more and more crowded frequency spectrum and a greater chance of a communication breakdown – unless you have strategies for interference mitigation.

LumenRadio’s patented Cognitive Coexistence technology predicts to the millisecond how the frequency spectrum will be utilized going forward. This prediction is used to hop to the best available and least crowded frequencies for continued high performance.

By being cognitive, we detect, identify and adapt to ever-changing conditions, giving you a truely reliable wireless connectivity solution.

Low Energy Mesh Technology

LumenRadio’s MiraOS enables ultra-low power consumption for battery-operated devices. The current consumption for meshing nodes has now been reduced to less than 16uA, which enables more than 15 years operation in routing mode from an AA-sized battery.

This is significantly better than any other competing wireless technology and enables battery-powered products to run on the same battery throughout their whole lifecycle. This also means that building-wide battery-powered meshing connectivity for building automation is now feasible for the first time.

Ultra-low energy meshing technology is a key enabler for wireless products running in industrial applications since you no longer have to replace batteries. This has been in demand for a long time, and by some even considered impossible – but with LumenRadio’s technology it is now a reality.

Concurrent Bluetooth

The common solution to concurrent wireless technologies has been to simply add two wireless chips into the product. For example, a Bluetooth chip for user interaction and another chip for the building-wide network. This adds cost, hardware size and complexity, and increases the power consumption of the device. Running multiple protocols with stringent timing requirements, concurrently on the same chip by time-sharing the radio, poses a huge challenge.

After years of innovation, LumenRadio has cracked this problem. With the latest releases of MiraOS it is now possible to concurrently combine Bluetooth with the ultra-reliable, low-energy, IPv6-capable, meshing network of MiraOS – on the same chip.

This means interactions between a wireless product and a smart device is now possible at the same time as the wireless mesh network is fully operational. Concurrent Bluetooth operation opens up many options such as intuitive and hassle-free commissioning and maintenance, local extraction of large data sets, and end-user interactions via an app.
